The Power of Twitter

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Social networking among both large and small businesses has and still is becoming one of the main avenues for marketing. As a platform from which to start or enhance a viral marketing campaign social networking sites have a great force behind them. That force is the people that use them – clients and customers, either existing or potential.

So why should you jump on the bandwagon?

The main thing to remember is that using a social networking site is not an immediate money making scheme, it does take time and should be used to build on your brand. Achieving brand awareness gives your company substance. Of course it has to be done in the right way. Many companies were setting up accounts on sites such as Twitter and doing more harm to their company’s images than good because they did not understand how to utilise their new voice. Now others have already made these mistakes we can learn from them and move forward. As with any outward facing element of a company ‘Tweeting’ should still be treated with a professional manner.

Some of the uses of twitter include:

  • Conversing with others in your industry or others who share you views
  • Gain tips and tricks from others in your industry
  • Listen to what is being said about your company and competitors
  • Contribute to what is being said about your company
  • Yes, promote your services but make sure you do not ‘over-promote’

So if you have not already given it a go, sign up to twitter. Give it a chance, listen for a while to ascertain how others in your industry are using the service. Develop your own voice and establish a loyal following. Use this following to virally push your brand’s awareness. After all, the power behind positive word-of-mouth is still one of the strongest recommendations a company can ask for.
